Animals in Emergencies Short Course

 

Join us Saturday, June 24, 2017, in Jefferson City, Missouri at the SEMA headquarters from 9-3:30 for continuing education.  Topics include how rescuers work together, hazard recognition, animal sheltering and managing shelter outbreaks. We will cover how to use appropriate restraint and euthanize in the field.  The day will finish with a Large Animal Rescue Program demonstration.

9:00-9:10 Welcome & MOVVC Overview – Dr. Ashley French

9:10-9:30 Tour of State Emergency Operations floor and Control Room


9:30-10:00 Dr. Catherine Vogelweid

From her Emergency Response Course Topics can include how rescue professionals work together, hazard recognition and responder safety.


10:00-10:10 BREAK


10:10-11:00 Dr. Chuck Massengill, Dr. Bill Jones & Mr. Mike Perkins
PETS Act – Challenges and solutions to emergency sheltering of companion animals. Brief overview of managing respiratory outbreaks and how canine influenza affects sheltering responses.


11:00-11:10 BREAK


11:10-12:00 Dr. Paul Schiltz
Injuries in animal emergencies, a brief overview and first aid in the field. How to use appropriate chemical & physical restraint in the field. Euthanasia in disasters and emergencies.
